Savasana

This is one of the most important aspects of yoga.  It encourages the body to assimilate the benefits for which you have just worked so hard. Allow yourself at least 10-15 minutes after a practice to simply lie down on a mat, long and straight, and simply surrender yourself completely to the present. Completely immerse yourself in the ‘now.’  Allow any intruding thoughts to simply pass, making no judgments on the thoughts whatsoever. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to ask each of your body parts individually to relax themselves, first tensing the muscles and then releasing them, moving from the toes on upwards to the jaw and even the eye muscles.  Try using an eye-pillow (sometimes filled with lavender or some other aromatherapy herb) to place a gentle weight on the eyes.  This helps them to move back further into the head.  Finally, bring your thoughts inwards, simply watching the breath as it enters your body and leaves your body.  If you find your thoughts straying and thinking about the day, invite them back to the breath.  Place a small alarm by your side so that you are not concerned about the time as you give your body the time to benefit from the asanas that you have practiced.  ‘Awaken’ your body slowly, moving first the fingers and toes, then bringing the knees into the chest, and rolling over onto the side, then lifting yourself into a seated position, keeping the eyes closed for a few moments.
